Random Exercise

About the project

Sitting too much is not only bad for your body, it also has a bad effect on the brain. To move around a few minutes at least once every hour improves your memory and concentration and boosts creativity. A lot of people spend most of their time at work sitting down, so how can you encourage people to get more movement into their day?

Random Exercise is an interactive website where you get a randomised suggestion for a physical exercise to do every time you visit the site. The exercise is shown by a looping animation that plays automatically as soon as the site is loaded. The exercises are possible to do no matter where you are (outside or in the office) and they are possible to do in any kind of clothing. The idea behind Random Exercise is to reduce the resistance towards exercising, there is no need to choose what exercises to do, and there is no need to push a play button or read instructions to start the exercise. The animated characters show people of different gender, body shape, age and race so that everyone can feel that exercise is good for you, no matter who you are.

The idea for Random Exercise was born after we participated in Brain-a-thon, a hackathon that was arranged by GIH, KTH, Mälardalens Högskola, SSE Business Lab and innovationskontoret vid Handelshögskolan i Stockholm (HHS). The theme for the hackathon was physical activity and brain health.
