Seven Senses

About the project

A common problem for writers, poets and songwriters is that it’s easy to get stuck in the same patterns when writing. It can also be a challenge to incorporate writing into your daily routine. “Object writing” is a creative exercise developed by Berklee College of Music professior Pat Pattison, who is also the author of the book “Writing better lyrics”. To do the exercise you spend ten minutes every day writing about a random word (the “object”) using your senses, sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, organic (the sensation of your inner organs) and kinestetic (the sensation of how your body relates to the environment).

Seven Senses is an app that is based on the Object Writing exercise, where we aim to make the process of completing the exercise easier. The app automatically gives you a random word to write about every time you start a new exercise, and a timer for ten minutes starts automatically. As you write, you can check off which senses you have written about by toggling icons at the top of the screen. When the ten minutes are over, the exercise finishes and you get a score based on how many senses you managed to include. All exercises are saved in an archive where you can review, remove or export the text that you have written. To help the user keep up the habit of writing every day, a reminder can be set for a specific time. On the start screen the user can also see their “streak” of how many days they managed to write.
